Gross...

...and yet so intriguing.
This afternoon while The Girl was sleeping hubby came running toward the house with a cicada. Let me tell you I was not overjoyed by his presence, the cicada not my husband ;-)

I think they are so freaky looking although I have never gotten this close to one before. I remember finding their "shells" all over the neighbors house when I was little. I remember thinking what a huge bug it must be.

In my book this thing was big and had these huge dark eyes. It never moved. It let me take picture after picture and it didn't even blink. Not that bugs blink but you know what I mean.

Have a wonderful day and check out what the rest of my friends are up to at I Heart Macro :-)

Shannon, It's the eyes that are freaking me out! But those wings! I would have to stuck them in a bezel with some resin! I think they would look so cool!

Oh ya, I remember them. I spent a couple of years in Philadelphia. Noisy buggars!!

Shannon, last summer I found the skeletons where they molted (I guess that is what they call it) all lined up on a branch. Oh the fun things we are finding to look at up close!

You know you are in full summer when the Cicadas are out. You know what is even more freakier than Cicadas? Cicada Killers… They are freaking huge wasps that hunt Cicadas. Seriously - huge wasps… eek!

That's incredible, Shannon! Just look at the engineering, the structure of those wings! I'm totally inspired. :-)

I'm excited to participate in my very first I Heart Macro today!

You know, there's an artist whose name escapes me who gilds these and enamels them (I think?) and makes them into pins -- or maybe he casts them? Anyway, they're amazing!

I just wanted to add that this guy was alive when my husband brought it to me and although I would have loved to pull off those wings and encase them in resin I just couldn't de-wing a real love cicada. Even ugly things deserve to live ;-)
I am hoping to find a dead one to de-wing at some point.

Great pics, Shannon! We had cicadas in Virginia and I actually loved the sound. Never got that close though. :)

They are very interesting creatures. Almost alien looking. You got some cool shots of this one!

Oh lord, what IS that thing?! I don't think we have them over here in the UK.....is it really huge?? They are cool shots but pretty freaky! I'm not a bug fan!
